How to Clean an Aluminium Awning on a House?

How to Clean an Aluminium Awning on a House? An aluminum awning refers to an architectural element of a house, which is made from aluminum. It is the vane over the window. Cleaning an aluminum awning requires the use of proper materials and cleaners, as any type of household cleaner will cause damage to and rust aluminum on the surface if applied in direct contact.

Tools and materials needed:

• Polish Cloth
• Soft sponge
• Mild soap solution
• Bucket of hot water, free from detergents and chemicals
• Towel
• Clean rags.

Steps that can be followed when cleaning an aluminum awning on a house.

Step 1 – Prepare the area

Select a surface that is covered in a soft surface like wood, tile, or cement and has drains where the water can run to. If the platform is not covered with these types of surfaces, cover it with something that can be easily removed like plastic. Use a towel to soak up any standing water on the floor. When the surface is ready, turn on the faucets to a steady flow to allow for easy cleaning.

Step 2 – Wipe the surface with a sponge and mild soap solution

To start with, dampen a clean and soft sponge. Get rid of all dirt from the surface by wiping it with a moistened sponge until there are no traces of dirt left.

Then try rubbing mild soap solution into the clean surface by squirting it onto the stainless steel brush that can be obtained from any hardware store. Use the sponge to spread the soap solution evenly across the surface. Rinse the sponge with clean water immediately if it is not already moistened when applying soap.

Step 3 – Rinse and dry

Rinse off the surface with a damp towel then wipe it dry with a clean rag. To ensure there are no smears left behind, allow it to air dry before wiping it again with a polish cloth until it shines.

Step 4 – Use the polish cloth on the surface

Use a clean and soft polish cloth to remove scratches in the awning by rubbing the surface with it. Polish cloth can be purchased from hardware shops, cleaning supply stores, and home improvement stores.

Rubbing it in one direction will cause scratches, so rub in circles to buff out any scuffs or scratches left on the surface. To ensure that all residue is removed from the surface, rinse it with a wet towel then wipe away any smears.

Step 5 – Remove any smears left behind

Use a clean rag to quickly remove any smears left behind. If there are fresh streaks found on the surface, rub in the same direction that the streak is moving to buff them out.

Step 6 – Protect the surface from sun damage

Protect the surface by applying a coat of liquid wax on it. Apply it by pouring some liquid wax into a clean plastic container then dip a soft cloth into it before rubbing it on the metal surface. Make sure that the wax is applied evenly on one side of the awning so that it will not gather in any stagnant corners.

Step 7 – Wrap the awning

To help protect the awning, wrap it with plastic sheeting to prevent it from getting damaged by rain, wind, and any other elements. Make sure all sides of your house are covered by plastic sheeting to prevent damage originating from falling objects.

To keep your awning clean, you must use a cleaner that’s specially formulated for aluminum. Anything purchased for cleaning other metals will damage the aluminum surfaces.

FAQS For Cleaning An Aluminium Awning

1) What is the best way to clean an aluminum awning?

Make sure that you use a soft cloth to buff out any marks left by smears. This will also help in removing residue on the surface that may have been left behind. Sometimes, rubbing it with a rag or leaving it in direct sunlight for too long can leave behind smears.

2) Is it alright to use a household cleaning product to wash an aluminum awning?

No. Household cleaners contain chemicals like chlorine, ammonia, and other materials that are harmful to aluminum surfaces. If the cleaner is allowed to contact the surface of aluminum directly, it will leave scratches and etchings on the metal. When using any type of detergent, always dilute it with water before using it on an aluminum surface.

Due to the porous nature of aluminum, it may take on a yellowish color if exposed to certain elements. To get rid of it, rinse the surface with water and then dry it with a clean cloth.

3) How do you clean an aluminum awning with a ladder?

A: Wipe the ladder with a soft cloth to remove dirt, dust, and smears similar to how you would clean the surface of other surfaces. Don’t forget to use a mild soap solution and rinse it afterward. Sometimes, if the ladder is left in direct sunlight for too long, it can leave behind yellowish stains on your aluminum awning. To avoid this problem, always dry your ladder or place it in direct sunlight.

4) Can an aluminum awning ever be cleaned with a power washer?

Yes. Use the same type of procedure that you would for other surfaces in your house to wash your aluminum awning. However, it is not recommended that you use power washers on aluminum because using them can cause more damage to the surface. If the unit is left on for too long, it can leave behind spots or other marks that can wear off after some time.

5) What is the best way to clean an aluminum awning that has paint stains?

The best thing to do is clean the surface with a paint stripper that can be obtained from hardware stores. They contain chemicals that effectively remove all traces of paint left on the surface of your aluminum awning. To prevent future occurrences of staining, apply a waterproof sealant to the surface before leaving it in direct sunlight.

6) Can you wash an aluminum awning with a pressure washer?

No. Although the pressure washer is stated to be safe on other surfaces, it will leave behind residue and marks on the surface of your aluminum awning exposure. If you do use the pressure washer, make sure that it only touches aluminum and not other surfaces. Some people advise cleaning and waxing your aluminum awning as one can damage or scratch off some of the primer coatings.

How to Clean an Aluminium Awning on a House? – Conclusion

If you only want to clean the surface and not wax it, be sure to wipe away the leftover residue with a clean and soft cloth after drying it off with a damp cloth.
